Design Story

The Sunburst Clock by designer and architect George Nelson belongs to the series of Vitra wall clocks which originated between 1948 and the 70s. The Nelson clock collection embodies the positive spirit of optimism of the 1950s and underscores Nelson's belief that one must offer people furniture and household accessories which reflected the mood of the age. Objects such as the Nelson Sunburst Clock and its reduced yet unmistakable graphic representation of the sun: and a work which radiates a lightness - both formal and philosophical. The Nelson collection of sculptural wall clocks is produced today by Vitra, a company with whom George Nelson cooperated from 1957 onwards and with whom he had a very close relationship. In addition George Nelson ran his own design office and is responsible for numerous ground breaking designs which today are considered icons of the "Mid-Century-Modern".
