Design Story

The contemporary furniture manufacturer Vitra stands for powerful designs that bring a high quality of aesthetics and function into homes and offices. That's also what the American designer George Nelson sought in the '50s - a time when the American dream and the idea of progress, that everything is possible, flourished. The economic boom and the desire to bring a modernity into Americans lives led George Nelson to design a series of everyday objects that were not only functionally but also provided a creative splash of colour or style. In addition to the wall clocks Nelson's work also features lights and other home accessories. The Vitra wall clocks are a series of thematically different objects made of different woods and metals and which have become popular collectibles: a fact which inspired the Vitra Design Museum to create a collection of re-editions. The Asterisk Clock creates a beautiful view point in space; its striking, straight dial unfolds into a unique effect and the graphic design of oversized pointer is a refreshing change from traditional wall clocks.
