Vilhelm Wohlert

Vilhelm Wohlert was born in 1920 in Copenhagen, where he later studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1944. Shortly afterwards, in 1946, he received the Gold Medal of the Academy. From 1951 to 1953 Wohlert was a guest professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and in 1958 he began working with Jørgen Bo on the design of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humblebæk, a project that spanned 33 years. The two later also built the Kunstmuseum Bochum as well as the Gustav Lübcke Museum in Hamm/Westfalen, Germany. From 1968 to 1986, Vilhelm Wohlert was a professor and honorary member of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and until 1971 was also Deputy Rector of the College. And still found time to design several lamps together with Louis Poulsen, including Wohlert in 1959, the Magasin ceiling light in 1974 and in 1995 the Magnum light in collaboration with Eleni Birkner. Wilhelm Wohlert received several awards for his work, alongside the 1979 Gold Medal, the C.F. Hansen Medal of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. The academic and designer died on 10 May 2007 in Klampenborg near Copenhagen.
