Vilhelm Lauritzen

Several of the works of the architect Vilhelm Lauritzen, such as the Daells Varehus or the radio studio Radiohuset in Copenhagen were breakthrough moments for Danish functionalism and today belong to the genuine monuments of modern European architecture. Born in 1894, Vilhelm Lauritzen studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and following his graduation established his own architecture office, Vilhelm Lauritzen Arkitekter, with whom he remained until 1969. A particular speciality of Vilhelm Lauritzen lighting design: Lauritzen regularly combining strongly directed light, so positioned as to generate dominant shadows with weaker, diffuse, light sources. It is therefore unsurprising that the architect Lauritzen also designed numerous lamps, including as the VL 37 family of lamps created in collaboration with Louis Poulsen for his Radiohuset in Copenhagen. And lamps which remain as popular and endearing today as ever.
