Stühle zum (Be)Sitzen, a smow Pop-up at the Grassi Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Leipzig

...Stühle zum (Be)Sitzen's brief tour through the (hi)story of chair design in western Europe ends with Harry Thaler's 2011 Pressed Chair through Nils Holger Moormann, a chair that as Harry once told us began as "a small fork made from one piece of wood", became a desire to create a chair in one material, and which through the choice of pressed aluminium not only neatly translates the moulded plywood of, for example, Arne Jacobsen, Aino and Alvar Aalto or Charles and Ray Eames into metal, but reminds that the plastic shell of the RAR that rocks next to the Pressed Chair in Stühle zum (Be)Sitzen began life as pressed steel, before that was deemed too expensive and the, then, novel fibreglass was used... And a Pressed Chair produced by Nils Holger Moormann, a manufacturer, a furniture publishing house, who arose from the ferment of 1980s Neue Deutsche Design, that questioning, challenging, provoking and polarising of and with furniture design and relationships to furniture of that period, by the eponymous Nils Holger Moormann who as a designer took the impulses and experiences of Neue Deutsche Design and began developing furniture that for all it appears very far removed from the brashness, insolence, humour, questioning, challenging, provoking and polarising of the 1980s, is but an alterative expression of that brashness, insolence, humour, questioning, challenging, provoking and polarising...

Nils Holger Moormann presents Salone di Aschau 2024

...Amongst the European designer furniture publishers Nils Holger Moormann has long stood out from the crowd, and that primarily because Nils Holger Moormann has never sought the crowd, has always done Nils Holger Moormann's thing, not the crowd's thing, and who in doing such has very much, and very justifiably, attracted a crowd lot of individuals... Thus while other furniture publishers dance to the tune of the international trade fair crowd, Nils Holger Moormann organise their own trade fair...

5 New Architecture & Design Exhibitions for July 2023

...Our five featured short steps for July 2023 can be taken in Stuttgart, New York, Hornu, London and Berlin... Habitat X: Climate-adapted coexistence of humans, animals and plants at the architekturgalerie am weißenhof, Stuttgart, Germany Stating the human societies design and plan their spaces for the needs of human societies isn't a radical claim, nor one that over the greater passage of time past many would have questioned; however, of late that questioning has not only begun, but has become increasingly persistent and loud...

The Historia Supellexalis: “K” for Knoll

...Knoll A Wilhelm; A Walter; A Willy; A Hans; A Florence; A Lineage Although research into its ancestry is still very much ongoing, the wild Knoll, Knoll furniturus, is popularly believed to have originated in the region of the contemporary Stuttgart; what is certain is that it was in the contemporary Stuttgart that Knoll furniturus was first domesticated as Knoll wilhelmus, a Knoll typified by its leathery character and whose most successful cultivation was unquestionably in conjunction with a leather furniture factory in the contemporary Stuttgart; and a leathery Knoll, a leather furniture factory, whose many admirers included the royal Württemberg court, the, then, rulers of the lands comprising the contemporary Stuttgart... And thus a new form of leather upholstery, a development of the leather upholsterer's craft, very much in keeping with developing ideals and principles of furniture in the Stuttgart of that age...

smow Song Contest 2022

...Stuttgart - Introduction of Video Surveillance: Somebody's Watching Me - Rockwell Following the introduction of video cameras in Mannheim in July 2001, Stuttgart became the second city in Baden-Württemberg to be placed under video surveillance when in January 2002 5 cameras entered service on the city's Rotebühlplatz: two cameras above ground and three in the underground station, a location described in January 2002 as a "crime hotspot"... 3 And that with, apparent, and certainly local, success, for in December 2002 the Stuttgart police announced that "the primary objective of preventing crime has been achieved" 4, and thus in July 2003, and in compliance with prevailing legislation, the video cameras were switched off...

The Historia Supellexalis: "G" for Grcic

Grcic A Konstantin; A Nurturing; A Reduction There are a great many legends surrounding the origins of Grcic, and while many are centred around the regions today known as München and Wuppertal, the more plausible appears to be that Grcic arose in the days of...

#campustour 2018: Rundgang @ Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart, Germany

...Atop bonny Killesberg, and beside Kochenhof, (the) Akademie der Bildenden Künste, ABK, Stuttgart has been nurturing a basic kernel within a bright kettle of students of numerous creative disciplines since 1761... But do we need that applied, functional art developed in the year past at the ABK Stuttgart...
