Rui Alves
Craft is designer Rui Alves' passion. His father and grandfather were skilled carpenters, consequently Alves came into contact with wood and tools from an early age and today continues that family tradition. His technical skills were complemented by the study of industrial design at the Institute of Art, Design and Enterprise University (IADE-U) in Lisbon. He founded the first studio "My Own Super Studio" in his hometown of Paços de Ferreira in Portugal in 2001, which he renamed "Rui Alves Design Office" in 2010. His furniture and product designs project his passion for materials and production: high-quality wood combined with stringent shapes and his love of detail. The Scandinavian manufacturer Menu can also identify with these qualities, and cooperated with Rui Alves on the Tailor Sofa, a sofa with a singular frame. Together they won the Bo Bedre Design Award 2017 for the Menu Sofa in the category "Furniture Design", an award thanked in no little degree to the sofa's refinement, its contemporary concept as well as for the appreciation of the traditions of Scandinavian design.
