Peter J. Lassen

According to Peter J. Lassen himself, he is a life artist. For everyone else, he is the designer of the Montana shelving system and known as the founder of the associated company. Above all, he is also a manufacturer and furniture producer. Peter J. Lassen, who died in August 2019, was a creative free spirit, always anxious that everybody is able to express their individual and personal style with his furniture. Lassen was introduced to Danish design early: after a distance studies in interior architecture, he took up a position with his father-in-law Fritz Hansen and worked there with some legends of the modern Danish furniture design, including Arne Jacobsen, Piet Hein, and Verner Panton. With sufficient expertise as well as with licenses for the 6060 shelf, Lassen left Fritz Hansen in 1979 and founded his own company on the island of Funen in 1982. Based on his successful 6060 design, Lassen developed the Montana shelving system, which with its square shape, the strong colours, and its round corners was revolutionary for its day and taken on with great enthusiasm. Today the modular shelving system is an integral part of the Danish and international design and remains as unmistakable and high quality as ever.
