Which material for your outdoor furniture: metal, wood or textile? Let some examples from designers guide you

As the days get longer and the sun stronger, we are naturally drawn outside to the terrace and the balcony, the garden and the park. Robust, weatherproof and easy to clean outdoor furniture are indispensable in enhancing the experience. These can be flexible multi-purpose chairs such as the Vegetal by the brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Vitra, or the Kartell Masters Chair, but also objects designed specifically for outdoor use, such as that from Gloster or Skagerak.

EXAMPLES OF METAL OUTDOOR FURNITURE

Conveniently, outdoor furniture often comes in coated metal, such as the Chair_One by Konstantin Grcic for Magis, which impresses both inside and out, or the Palissade collection from the Scandinavian manufacturer Hay.

EXAMPLES OF TEXTILE OR WOOD OUTDOOR FURNITURE
Furniture made of wood or textile is perfectly suitable for the balmy summer evening on the terrace; for example, the portfolio of the Danish family business Skagerak features a wide selection of outdoor furniture crafted from natural woods or fabrics, and objects which impress not only on account of their timeless design but also because of their sustainability.

EXAMPLES of FABRIC OUTDOOR FURNITURE : HAMMOCKS, OUTDOOR BEAN BAGS AND CUSHIONS
If you want to be particularly comfortable in the outdoor area, Beanbags are a must (if suitable for outdoor use) - from the hammock to the beanbag to the practical stool, the Danish brand offer a wide range of fresh outdoor products that all have one thing in common: they are incredibly comfortable and also visually pleasing. And which garden party guest will fail to be impressed by the impressive fire bowls Heliosand Flame?

Furnishing small balconies – 7 tips for your balcony design

With small balconies or loggias that do not offer as much space as a terrace or a spacious garden, you should be clear from the very beginning about how you plan to use your balcony before setting up. Such considerations also depend on factors such as the direction in which your balcony is oriented: while south-facing balconies get the most sun and are therefore best suited for sunbathing and a small herb garden, balconies in other orientations will be most optimally used at specific times of the day. And regardless of orientation and use, most people prefer their balcony to have easy-care greenery and cozy, cheerful furnishings. So that even small balconies develop living room qualities in summer, we have put together a few tips that will help you to set up your balcony in a space-saving, functional and appealing fashion.

1. Planning matters
Before you buy furniture for your balcony, it is advisable to measure the area exactly and to go through a few possible variants using sketches. An important rule of thumb: in order that you can happily move around on your balcony, half of the floor should remain free.

2. The right furniture for my little balcony
The furniture should ideally be rather small, dainty and of course as practical as possible, proportional to the balcony. Instead of solid outdoor armchairs, it is recommended to use stools, small side tables, folding chairs and folding tables or, for example, folding hanging tables. Garden chairs and tables, such as the classic Fermob balcony furniture, can be easily set aside and stored in a space-saving manner during the winter. Loungers or bean bags are best combined with sun protection and a side table can be arranged on which books or drinks can be placed.

3. Use balcony space efficiently
For small balconies, it is recommended to include walls and railings in your planning. Instead of using large planters, it is best to use vertical greenery or to plant classic balcony boxes on the railing. Space-saving hanging tables such as the practical Fermob balcony table are just the right choice here.

4. A harmonious colour concept for the balcony
So that small balconies appear harmonious, the colour concept is best kept simple: a basic tone that is combined with one or two colours creates a calm atmosphere. Strong colours can also be used on the balcony, and which shine in the sun and ensure a good mood.

5. Don't forget the flooring
To make your small balcony appear a bit larger, if possible, choose the flooring so that it is similar in type or colour to that of the adjacent rooms.

6. Skilfully use balcony plants
The balcony planting creates a very individual atmosphere depending on personal taste and can also serve as a privacy screen so that no further device is necessary.

7. Balcony lighting and accessories for a cosy oasis of well-being
Your balcony becomes really cosy in combination with suitable accessories such as pillows or blankets. Whereby a highlight are energy-saving, portable battery lights, which wirelessly create a particularly cosy and homely atmosphere and withstand light rain showers.

spoga+gafa Cologne 2018: High Five!!

On the train to Cologne the signs were unmissable, the sun may have been gloriously, victoriously, shinning, as it has done since Easter, from a clear azure sky: but autumn is definitely approaching. And while it may be a bit premature to start planning for...

Garden Unique Youngstars Cologne 2015

...As we noted in our post on the 2015 Garden Unique Youngstars competition winner "snak" by Gunnar Søren Petersen, the contemporary outdoor furniture market is largely a forgotten world as far as quality design is concerned... We're not going to claim that we were enamoured by all the nominated projects, and you'd hopefully not believe us if we did; however, in terms of the thinking behind the projects, the execution of the ideas and the honesty of the designs all fifteen projects demonstrated that if it wanted to the outdoor goods industry could be every bit as interesting, relevant and future orientated as its domestic and office cousins...

new at smow: Thonet outdoor

...And punctually to the start of The Ashes season we can now offer the extended Thonet outdoor range; quite possibly the most stylish furniture for sitting in the garden and listening to TMS or follow Aggers on Twitter...
