The Design
Unmistakably reminiscent of Marcel Breuer's B 9 nesting tables the B 97 side table is a 1933 creation from the in-house Thonet Design Team. For all through the combination of tubular steel and wood the Thonet design reminds of Breuer's Bauhaus classics; whereby the Thonet B 97 has one practical advantage - thanks to the cantilever nature of the design, the Thonet B 97 can be pulled directly up to a sofa or bed. Thus the elegant tubular steel classic is not only a stylistically confident object but also a versatile and variable everyday companion. The Thonet table is available in two different heights - 52 or 57 cm - and can be purchased separately or as a set.
Historical Context
In the first decades of the 20th century institutions such as Bauhaus helped change contemporary ideas on building, living and our relationship to the built environment and the objects which surround us. Including the methods by which furniture and other consumer goods are produced. Marcel Breuer's response was to experiment with using thin walled steel tubing for furniture production, experiments which eventually led to the development of numerous iconic objects where the manufacturing process is as responsible for the form as the designer. In addition this fusion of art and crafts had a major influence on both the functionality of the objects and the egalitarian desire to be able to produce good design via industrial production at low prices. Formally this new modular or constructivist approach to the design and construction of furniture and accessories fitted in very well with the new buildings of the period.
Production
The German furniture maker Thonet produces the B 97 side table from chrome plated steel tube and with beech panel which is optionally available stained or lacquered in a range of colours. In addition to representing a timeless design the high quality of the materials utilised goes against the trend of our throwaway age. As with all Thonet furniture the manufacturing process of the Thonet B 97 is certified according to the standards of the the Green Globe Certificate - a predicate which respects not only ecological but also economic and social sustainability, and thus represents the philosophy of a holistically sustainable approach at Thonet. Something underscored by the fact that all the materials used are environmentally friendly, recyclable and can be processed by means of electricity that comes from 100% environmentally sustainable sources. Moreover Thonet invested in recycling plants for solvent to make an active contribution to reducing the environmental footprint.
Designer and Manufacturer
In the case of the Thonet B 97 side table manufacturers and designers are the same: the B 97 coming as it does from the Thonet Design Team. Thonet's design philosophy builds in terms of aesthetics, innovation and functionality on the ideals developed by company founder Michael Thonet, who with the development of his system for producing furniture from bentwood revolutionised furniture design and the furniture industry. In the 1920s and 1930s Thonet worked together with leading protagonists of the new living such as Marcel Breuer, and thus it is no coincidence that the B 97 side table is strongly reminiscent of Breuer's B 9 table. With a loyal team of designers, engineers and craftsmen, the family-run company develops their product portfolio in the pastoral quiet Frankenberg, Germany; a product portfolio which is every bit as contemporary and timeless as the historic icons and which distinguishes itself on account of the excellent craftsmanship and resource-saving production technologies.
