The Aluminium Chairs collection was designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1958: and all began when Alexander Girard, a good friend of Charles Eames' complained about the fact that there were no suitable outdoor chairs on the market for an architecture commission on which he was working. And thus whereas today the Aluminium Chairs are largely associated with indoor use, originally they were much more universally conceived. A universality underscored by the choice of rotary or fixed bases, with or without armrests, with a high backrest, on wheels or as a lounge variant - the many versions of the classic with aluminium frame meaning their is a suitable for every conceivable of situation. With their Aluminium Chair design the Eames' departed from the principle of the seat shell and instead strung a taught piece of fabric or leather between two aluminium side panels. Today the flowing seat and backrest of the Vitra Aluminium Group offer lightweight, ergonomic seating which adjusts to meet the demands of the occupant an thus provides a high level of seating comfort. And as an object testifies that Charles and Ray Eames are rightly celebrated among the most important designers of the 20th century. In addition to the family of Aluminium Chairs the Swiss manufacturer Vitra produces and distributes the complete collection of furniture design by Charles and Ray Eames.
