The chair 404 / 404F by Stefan Diez combines, regardless of with or without armrests, traditional manufacturing processes with an innovative design. The German furniture company Thonet has long been known for his bentwood process, by which its famous coffee house chair was for decades produced, and which has now been employed by the young designer Stefan Diez to develop a chair system that conforms to the formal and ergonomic requirements of a contemporary chair - as well as aesthetic requirements of contemporary society.

Design Story

The designer Stefan Diez was born in 1971 in Freising, Bavaria, and from early years decided to pursue a creative career: following a carpentry apprenticeship and courses in architecture, he studied industrial design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart. His works are characterized by the influences of such renowned designers as Richard Sapper and Konstantin Grcic, for whom he worked as an assistant, before in 2003 he opened his own design studio in Munich. Today he works for a roster of international clients including companies as varied as Moroso, Schönbuch or also Thonet. In cooperation with Thonet Stefan Diez designed the 404 Chair, a work in which he takes the legacy of the manufacturer and interprets their famous bentwood process anew. Made famous by the Viennese coffee house chair 214 the Thonet manufacturing process redefined the formal and material boundaries of wood. A genuine revolution in the early 20th century the process has become commonplace, but as Stefan Diez perfectly demonstrates commonplace need not be a synonym for stereotyped. The chairs 404 / 404F impresses with their organically shaped legs which converge under the seat in a "node" and give over to the ergonomically curved seat. With its exciting design that presents itself differently from every angle, and being as it is available in a wide range of colours and with or without armrests the 404 / 404F is a refreshing and thoroughly contemporary remake of the classic Thonet bentwood chair.
