As a fully upholstered seating object the armchair has only existed since the Middle Ages, and was once reserved for the nobility and the upper middle classes. Since the end of the 19th century however it has become ever more universal, its democratisation taking a decisive step in context of the economic upswing of the 1950s when the armchair then found its way into many private households.
