In the 1920s the designer Marcel Breuer worked in the workshop of the Bauhaus Dessau where he experimented with the, then, newly available material tubular steel. The result was products such as the B 22 shelving system, the B 9 nesting tables or the armchair B 3, a work more commonly known as the Wassily chair. Many of these Bauhaus furniture classics are produced today by the German manufacturer Thonet, a company who also realise their own designs. The in-house Thonet design Team referred to the Bauhaus style and designed a series of side tables and smaller shelving systems - all published in the famous Thonet catalogue of 1930/31. With its bent tubular steel frame and wooden shelves the B 22 shelving system is highly reminiscent of many other Breuer designs, such as the S 285 desk, but also of the furniture of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Mart Stam, which arose at the same time. The B 22 shelving is characterised by its simple form and high adaptability. Thanks to the many available colours and finishes in which it is available and its timeless style this delicate and aesthetically charming work can be used in numerous locations and scenarios. In addition the Thonet shelves are available in two different versions, one with equally spaced shelves and a second with differently separated shelves and which is especially useful for the simultaneous storage of CDs and folders.
