When two Italians work together on the development of a product, the result is not infrequently a design classic. So with the Tolomeo Lettura, a lighting object that has become a worldwide commercial and critical success in addition to garnering an enormous following and winning the highly renowned Compasso d'Oro. Designed in 1987 by Michele de Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina, the Tolomeo floor lamp continues to impress through its slim design, a construction concept which gives the object an impressive, though never dominating, presence. In addition there are only very few floor lamps who can compete with the Artemide floor lamp in terms of mobility and flexibility, a functionality the Tolomeo Lettura achieves on account of its intelligent spring balance system. Not that the Tolomeo Lettura's combination of grace and functionality is a unique feature amongst Artemide designs, far from it: as a manufacturer Artemide focuses on concepts which combine innovative functionality and high quality design, an approach which has seen them become one of the biggest and most important players in the field of lighting design. And in all products the Artemide "The Human Light" principle is always at the centre of all developments. Understanding that light is not just illumination but a positive factor in life quality Artemide aim for solutions which use light support daily human functions and routines: be they physical, mental or spiritual. And in this sense one can understand why the Artemide Tolomeo Lettura has been given the flexibility to allow the user to align it with their current needs and demands.
