The Design
With its ergonomically shaped, convoluted, almost S-shaped, plastic seat shell the BCN bar stool brings a sense of purpose with it, and yet with its essentially organic character fits perfectly into the space. Thus the Kristalia BCN bar stool is not only suitable for bars, pubs and restaurants, but is also a real eye-catcher in the domestic kitchen. Launched in 2008 Harry & Camila's design has helped Kristalia establish and extend its excellent reputation. And reputation for excellence. In addition to the BCN bar stool, the designer duo Harry and Camilla have also developed the BCN Side Table as well as a variant of the bar stool with a wooden base: the Kristalia BCN Bar Stool Wood.
Designer
Industrial designer Harry van Hpj Ierssel was born in Holland in 1966, fashion designer Camila vega Faba in 1971 on Cuba. The pair met in 1994 at the Domus Academy in Milan, and not only went on to marry but established their own design studio in Milan in 1998. Since establishing their own studio Harry & Camila have established a strong international reputation and have undertaken projects with a number of international manufacturers, including with the Italian label Kristalia. In 2002 Harry & Camila moved to Barcelona from where they both continued their international cooperations and continued to produce contemporary design that focuses on experimentation with materials any typologies.
Production
On a basic level the ergonomically shaped seat shell is the most distinctive feature of BCN bar stool; however, for the Italian furniture manufacturer Kristalia the realisation of the design was also the biggest challenge. After much experimentation they came across the plastic PBT - a material which is normally processes in the electronics industry but which is unusual in the furniture industry, yet which thanks to its extreme stability and resistance is particularly well suited for the production of the characteristic, curvy shaped seat shell of the Kristalia BCN collection. The seat shell is combined with a tubular steel frame available in different heights and either chrome plated or painted in the colour of the seat shell. In the painted versions the Kristalia BCN bar stool is also suitable for outdoor use.
Manufacturer
Established in 1994 in northern Italy the furniture company Kristalia stands in the prestigious tradition Italian furniture design. The manufacturer's portfolio of young styles and unconventional ideas is characterised by the use of materials and production borrowed from other sectors - as can be perfectly demonstrated by the use of the material PBT in the BCN bar stool and BCN Bar Stool Wood, a material typically used in the electronics industry. A basic component of the Kristalia philosophy is formally reduced designs which express unique ideas, and which thus are often innovative or new interpretations of design standards, such as the one-piece shell chair Elephant Tube by Neuland Industriedesign. The aim of Kristalia's cooperations with designers such Lucidi & Pevere, Neuland Industriedesign and Patrick Norguet is to create a space for creativity and self-expression; a process which regularly results in ambitious projects.
