Marcel Breuer pioneered the creation of bent steel tube furniture. In the 1920s, he developed his method and thereby created a whole range of tubular steel furniture, many of which are still available today through Thonet, including the B 9 nesting tables, a design which was amongst the very first Marcel Breuer steel tube creations. The cold, bent metal tube and the simple shelf were typical of the Bauhaus style, a style which aimed to get away from the quirky, organic patterns of the age and instead express the coming machine future through straight lines and pleasingly reduced forms. The tubular steel furniture by Marcel Breuer are principally characterized mainly by their unemotional and graceful figure, a character trait which serves to underscore the elegant simplicity of the design. While the B 9 tables are distinguished by variety of forms, the elongated B 10 side table impresses with its very minimal visual imagery.
