Design Story

In 1960 Charles and Ray Eames were awarded a commission by Time Inc. to fit out three lobbies in their New York Rockefeller Centre headquarters. A commission which resulted not only in the famous Eames Lobby Chairs but also a series of solid walnut stools. The small walnut stools, which can just as easily be used as side tables, bring all the advantages of their material: they are robust, stable and pleasantly smooth to the touch. In addition thanks to their high-quality varnish they literally shine in every room, while the individual wood grain makes each stool unique. The stools are available in three different models, models which differ in the profiles yet which all appear as large chess pieces. The slightly curved top of the stools serves as either a pleasant seat or side table. As a designer duo Charles and Ray Eames were arguably the most important protagonists of furniture design during the 20th century and are of fundamental importance to the manufacturer Vitra, whose company history begins in the 1950s with the implementation of designs by Charles and Ray Eames.
