Eames Chairs
Ray and Charles Eames, arguably the best-known designer couple in the American modern age, were active in all areas related to furnishings and domestic culture. Their particular forte however was chair designs: chairs, which today form an integral part of American design history and are represented in the most important design collections in the world. The Swiss furniture manufacturer Vitra has been producing and selling Eames chairs in the European since the 1950s, and even worked closely with the Eames' on later models. The fact that the design icons are so successful is largely due to the fact that the Eames principally developed families of chairs, with obvious exceptions such as the Lounge Chair or their various stools. Whether the one-piece seat of the Eames Plastic Chairs or the braced side profiles of the Vitra Aluminium Chairs, the chair families are always based on an innovative concept which makes the chairs distinctive and which allows different chair types to be utilised in one harmonious composition.
