Maison et Objet Paris Autumn 2018: High 5!!

The biggest disappointment at Maison et Objet Autumn 2018 was that Announcement Lady wasn't broadcasting across the halls, and so this year there was no continual "Mesdames, Messieurs", and so we had no continual Sash soundtrack to carry us though our visit. We just hope Announcement Lady's absence wasn't on account of us, we hope she didn't quit because she felt we were mocking her, being cheeky, or otherwise making fun of her. We weren't. It was genuinely one of our highlights at Maison et

smow blog compact: Hangout by Proof of Guilt

In our recent conversation with Birgit Severin and Guillaume Neu-Rinaudo about their Heimat Lamp project they told us that the lamp was not only their first joint project but in many ways a test joint project to see how well they cooperated. Or perhaps better put, if they could cooperate. And was a test which they obviously both passed, for at Salone Satellite 2016 in Milan Birgit and Guillaume presented new, joint, projects, and a new, joint, venture, the design studio "Proof of Guilt" For us

Heimat Lamp by Birgit Severin and Guillaume Neu-Rinaudo

The question as to what "home" means has never been an easy one to answer, and in our global age of networked, anonymous, communities, our age of refugees and migrant workers, our age of abstract "Homeland Security" agencies, the question has in many ways become even more complicated. The Lamp Heimat (Homeland) by Berlin based designers Birgit Severin and Guillaume Neu-Rinaudo is an attempt to approach an answer. Birgit Severin and Guillaume Neu-Rinaudo met while studying at Design Academy

smow blog 2014. A pictorial review: February

Cold as February 2014 unquestionably was, we managed to warm ourselves with exhibitions looking at the 1920s medial representation of Bauhaus Dessau, the life and works of Marianne Brandt and the work of Berlin based designer Birgit Severin. And got all excited by some USM window fittings!

(smow) blog compact Dutch Design Week Special: Blumenampel Edition by Zascho Petkow and Birgit Severin for Atelier Haussmann

It is very rare that one comes across an object where a manufacturer has combined two independently developed products into one. And even rarer that we like such an object. Our natural resistance reaction is to say, No. No. Not on our watch. Begone. We were however instantly taken with the so-called Blumenampel Edition by Zascho Petkow and Birgit Severin for Berlin based Atelier Haussmann. Possibly because initially we didn't know its provenance. That only became clear in conversation with

Unter Zwischen im Ampelhaus, Oranienbaum

In 2011 a group of Dutch artists and designers established the Orangemann Trust and set about converting an old, abandoned house in the centre of Oranienbaum into a gallery for contemporary art and design. That Oranienbaum is a village of some 3000 inhabitants situated 150 kilometres south of Berlin, 80 kilometres north of Leipzig and 4 light years from the next railway station, the location could appear somewhat questionable. Could. Were it not for the fact that modern Oranienbaum was

Birgit Severin - Lifetimes at the DMY Design Gallery Berlin

Until April 16th the DMY Design Gallery Berlin is presenting the exhibition "Lifetimes" by Berlin based designer Birgit Severin. The inaugural exhibition in the new DMY Design Gallery. Following the demise of the "original" DMY Gallery in Berlin's stilwerk "design shopping centre", DMY appeared to have decided to concentrate on their global series of exhibitions and running Germany's most important design contest, the Designpreis der Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Silence can however be
