On Thursday February 13th the 2014 Designpreis Halle jury met to peruse the entries submitted for this years competition. And select the winners.
Initiated in 2007 the Designpreis Halle is an international, inter-disciplinary design competition staged every three(-ish) years. Following the theme "Electricity" in 2007 and "Travel" in 2010, entrants for the 2014 Designpreis Halle were set the challenge of "Water".
How who approached the topic and why wont however be unveiled until the awards ceremony and exhibition vernissage on June 3rd.
Sadly.
What we do know is that the 2014 Designpreis Halle attracted some 336 entries from 41 nations - a clear increase on the 166 entries from 13 nations received in 2010. A fact that may or may not be related to the doubling of the total prize money pool to Euro 10,000 for 2014.
The 2014 jury under the command of Hamburg design critic Thomas Edelmann, and including in its ranks, amongst others, Prof. Volker Albus, Nils Holger Moormann, and the new Director of the Kunstgewerbemuseum Dresden Tulga Beyerle, reduced the 336 entries down to 20 which will be included in the exhibition and the accompanying catalogue.
As we say, who they are, and who from the 20 has won what will be announced on June 3rd in the controlled grandeur of the Stadtbad Halle.
Should the 2014 exhibition prove to be half as entertaining as the 2010 exhibition in the historic tram depot, it promises to be a true delight. And the perfect digestif to DMY Berlin 2014.
We'll will of course keep you updated.......
