Despite the unnecessary unpleasantness on show at Leipzig Messe, (post to follow, awaiting legal clearance) the 2013 Designers’ Open Spots program provides more than enough reasons to get out and explore Leipzig creativity.
One particularly good example is Plagwitz Village based collective diefabrik.
Our introduction to diefabrik came via their cardboard furniture collection, including the shelf system “Constructo” and the Lounger “Chair777″, shown at Designers' Open 2009. An introduction that was and is one of those moments we’ll probably never forget: the objects were presented on the lower ground floor, next to, or better put, just under, an escalator. Very romantic looking back…..
Since then we’ve observed the studios development at a safe distance and have greatly enjoyed what they have achieved, be it the photo carpet “flickrl rug”, the Pothole lamps, the tomboxes mobile speakers systems, the “Pepe” pepper mills or perhaps most entertaining of all the guerilla action they staged at DMY Berlin 2012 when the created the most delightful street art installation from elements of the Constructo shelf system.
Just one of those delightful moments that reminds us that like vets true creatives can deal with more than one Genus.
During Designers' Open 2013 diefabrik are opening their workshop to the public where, in addition to a display of their complete collection, one can learn more about the individuals behind the company, their philosophy, approach to design and, somewhat obviously, see where and how the goods are made.
You’ll understand later why that is important.
If you get the chance to visit, we can thoroughly recommend you take it.
diefabrik can be found at Klingenstraße 20a 04229 Leipzig and at http://diefabrik.org
