From Friday December 7th until Sunday December 9th the Wilhelmspalais in Stuttgart is hosting the 9th DEKUMO Art and Design Fair.
Initiated in 2004 as a sales fair for local designers and artists DEKUMO has grown steadily over the years: both geographically as well as in volume. Whereas the original version featured the works of some 30 design studios, principally from Stuttgart, the 2012 edition presents 110 exhibitors from as far afield as… we’ll to be honest that’s really hard to tell from website, but there are definitely exhibitors from, for example, Neuss and Berlin.
But it’s the Stuttgart focus that makes the event interesting for us.
In the coming weeks we will publish an interview with two Stuttgart designers in which they praise the level of quiet professionalism in the Stuttgart design scene. Berlin may get all the media attention for its “Arm aber Sexy” party lifestyle. Or Munich the glossy magazine articles featuring its Schickeria. In Stuttgart, so the story we were told, the designers just get on with doing their job. And doing it very well thank you very much!
And that without the need to turn to felt. Something which can only be praised in the highest terms.
At DEKUMO we all have an opportunity to asses if the above is true. And the designers have a chance to sell their products to a local public. Something which is probably more important now than it was in 2004.
The DEKUMO focus is largely fashion and accessories but art and furniture are also included. As is a section on “sustainable design”. We refer all readers to our International Marianne Brandt Contest 2013 post . The sentiments hold true here.
In addition to the sales stands DEKUMO 2012 also features fashion shows, kids workshop and a DIY stand run by DAWANDA
DEKUMO Stuttgart 2012 takes place in the Wilhelmspalais, Konrad-Adenauer-Str. 2, 70173 Stuttgart over the weekend December 7th – December 9th.
