Next week the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 begins in Düsseldorf – and we can’t remember the last time we saw Lena?
Curious.
But before the singing starts, Düsseldorf will play host to an equally important attempt at European understanding: EuroDesignExhibition – Sit down please” 40 Stools from 40 Countries”
Featuring the work of young designers from across Europe the EuroDesignExhibition is a unique attempt to see if one can define cultures through furniture.
Apparently design is an important feature of our modern culture – but in how far is furniture design influenced by an innate understanding of our cultural identity ? Or are we all just “European” ?
Portugal will be represented in Düsseldorf by Marco dos Santos Pina.
What does my chair say about Portugal?
With my stool it was important for me that it displayed a typical north-european aesthetic (“reduce to the max” or “less is more” ) as a reference to the German influence on my work. The Portuguese are a proud people and so it was extremely important for me that the stool was self-produced. I am proud that I can produce it myself.
And so the design is a fusion of two cultures that allow ever more forms of expression.
Exactly what Marco dos Santos Pina has created can be viewed at Teilmöbliert, Lorettostrasse 9, 40219 Düsseldorf from May 6th – 20th.
And in the coming days we will publish some photos of the exhibition.
