Under the title YP – Young Professionals SintLucas College of Applied Design is running four shows at the 2010 Dutch Design Week.
Two of them in Pennings Inside, even if we say so ourselves a very agreeable designer furniture store on the edge of Eindhoven city centre.
YP (Young Professionals) – Out of the box, is a collection of stools from fourth year students made using differing materials. So a standard student project exhibition.
As such the exhibition is full of the sort of fanciful creations one expects from such projects; however, as ever the final products are less important than the approach and the thinking behind the product.
As our old maths teacher used to say – always show your workings, they’re more important than the answer.
And so although we found very few products that we could claim to like, we were very impressed with a couple of the approaches used and ideas developed; in particular a wooden chair with “in-built” newspaper/magazine holder by Vivienne van den Dungen. Our one complaint would be that the current version doesn’t really seem to know what it is: the higher component being to short to be a back rest and to narrow to be used for holding, for example, a cup. But the basic idea is very interesting.
YP (Young Professionals) – graduates meanwhile shows works by students who have completed heir studies at SintLucas and gone on to a post-graduate course at other institutions. The absolute highlight for us was without question the sadly unnamed hanging carrier by Manon van Hoeckel
In total there were three variations but all based on the same principle. On the end of leather straps one has clips. The clips hold the object to be transported fast – and off you go per foot or bike.
Although in the product photos, magazines are always being carried, we have a whole host of folders, books – and technical equipment – that we often need to transport per bike.
A rucksack is often too big, a tote bag to complicated.
Manon van Hoeckel’s solution looks perfect.
The SintLucas shows do only offer a very limited view of the work of SintLucas students – but such shows are important outlet for students and always well worth a visit.
And can be viewed until 31st October at Pennings Inside, Geldropseweg 63 Eindhoven.
