Demolition Question at the Deutsches Architektur Zentrum, DAZ, Berlin

...With the showcase Demolition Question the Deutsches Architektur Zentrum, DAZ, Berlin provide a platform for reflecting on those arguments... A contemporaneous that can be approached and reflected upon in the second strand via the so-called Abriss-Atlas, Demolition Atlas, and its examples of buildings either in danger of demolition or that have already gone, in Kassel, Munich, Berlin and the State of Brandenburg, the latter including several in Potsdam that have either vanished or are scheduled to vanish on account of the contemporary obsession of the authorities in Potsdam, and as noted from Re:Generation...

Architecture & Design Titbits: Where Rum Becomes Art -The Neue Nationalgalerie Berlin by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

...Starting with the not inappropriate titbit that the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was first sketched on the back of a cocktail napkin... For when commissioned in 1962 to build a new museum for 20th century art in Berlin Ludwig Mies van der Rohe had an answer in his desk drawer; a building that echoes the work of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, that defining architect of 19th century Prussian Berlin, an important, defining, early influence on Ludwig Mies van der Rohe that remained with him informing his work, his architectural and furniture work, for what is the base of his and Sergius Ruegenberg's Barcelona Chair if not a reimagining of Schinkel's ever informative and instructive early 19th century cast iron garden chair, that serial, industrial chair from an age before serial, industrial furniture production...

5 New Architecture & Design Exhibitions for December 2024

..." Our locations for taking advantage of all 31 glorious days of December 2024 can be found in Herford, Philadelphia, Bratislava, Berlin and Caesar's native Rome... sk "Dessauer Strasse and other stories on emancipatory housing" at the Deutsches Architektur Zentrum, DAZ, Berlin, Germany As preparations were being made for the 1987 International Building Exhibition, IBA, in West-Berlin, a group of female architects and planners questioned the male dominance of not only the projects being planned for IBA 87, but of architecture and urban planning in general that the male dominance of IBA 87 reflected, and mobilised themselves as Feministische Organisation von Planerinnen und Architektinnen, FOPA, by way of demanding a less male centric architecture and urban planning...

Design for Children at the Bröhan Museum, Berlin

...With the exhibtion Design for Children the Bröhan Museum, Berlin, explore the relationships between design, children and childhood over the century and a bit of their co-existence... A focus on playgrounds the curators very satisfyingly locate in Berlin, including mapping where examples of Beltzig's designs can be found in the German capital, and thereby encouraging you to get out and explore the works in situ, and in the hands of children not of museum curators and custodians...

Stühle zum (Be)Sitzen, a smow Pop-up at the Grassi Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Leipzig

...Stühle zum (Be)Sitzen's brief tour through the (hi)story of chair design in western Europe ends with Harry Thaler's 2011 Pressed Chair through Nils Holger Moormann, a chair that as Harry once told us began as "a small fork made from one piece of wood", became a desire to create a chair in one material, and which through the choice of pressed aluminium not only neatly translates the moulded plywood of, for example, Arne Jacobsen, Aino and Alvar Aalto or Charles and Ray Eames into metal, but reminds that the plastic shell of the RAR that rocks next to the Pressed Chair in Stühle zum (Be)Sitzen began life as pressed steel, before that was deemed too expensive and the, then, novel fibreglass was used... And a Pressed Chair produced by Nils Holger Moormann, a manufacturer, a furniture publishing house, who arose from the ferment of 1980s Neue Deutsche Design, that questioning, challenging, provoking and polarising of and with furniture design and relationships to furniture of that period, by the eponymous Nils Holger Moormann who as a designer took the impulses and experiences of Neue Deutsche Design and began developing furniture that for all it appears very far removed from the brashness, insolence, humour, questioning, challenging, provoking and polarising of the 1980s, is but an alterative expression of that brashness, insolence, humour, questioning, challenging, provoking and polarising...

Nils Holger Moormann presents Salone di Aschau 2024

...Amongst the European designer furniture publishers Nils Holger Moormann has long stood out from the crowd, and that primarily because Nils Holger Moormann has never sought the crowd, has always done Nils Holger Moormann's thing, not the crowd's thing, and who in doing such has very much, and very justifiably, attracted a crowd lot of individuals... Thus while other furniture publishers dance to the tune of the international trade fair crowd, Nils Holger Moormann organise their own trade fair...
