Bar Stools
Reach for heights on the ideal bar stool
Bar stools, also known as bar chairs or counter stools, are not just for bars and lobbies, they can also be found in living rooms and kitchens, in restaurants and cafés as locations where you can drink a coffee at the counter while reading a newspaper.
The height of a bar stool usually allows you to be at eye level with a standing person. The raised seating position also guarantees a better overview: for example, we can better observe the preparation of drinks at the counter or see what is going on on the street.
Bar stool design has evolved with time: designer bar stools now also have backrests, armrests or footrests for more comfort and sometimes resemble more a raised chair. Such bar stools are therefore also called bar chairs; an example is the High Chair Series 7 through Fritz Hansen, which is a "high" version of the famous Series 7 chair by Arne Jacobsen.

Bar stools for social gatherings
Bar stools have slowly found their way into our interiors and are becoming ever more common in our kitchens, for all open kitchens or kitchen islands where bar stools make it possible to group sitters around a central location, thus allowing you to cook on the worktop, drink a glass of wine or even eat around the island while chatting with friends or family. Children can also enjoy a raised breakfast, which they can eat comfortably on a high chair with a backrest such as the High chair HAL Ply.
When selecting a bar stool it is important to pay attention to the height of the object in relation to the kitchen island or table. And also the size of the user: choose a high, height-adjustable stool such as the Spoon bar stool from Kartell for small (and large) sitters. Bar stools with footrests are also particularly comfortable. A bar stool with a backrest offers the opportunity to lean back, which gives a feeling of security while also providing more comfort.
The bar stool in cafes and restaurants
Designer bar stools are often associated with the catering industry: no coincidence as bar stools can be used to furnish pubs, cafes and bars in a practical and versatile fashion. The functions of the bar stool have adapted over time to the needs of guests: instead of a simple wooden seat, many models today offer more comfort. There are not only models with a comfortable, padded seat, some bar stools, such as the Bombo Stool, for example, are also rotatable and height-adjustable, others like the Bertoia Bar Stool have a backrest.
Many bar stools are also designed for outdoor use, such as the Masters Bar Stool by Philippe Starck, which can be used to create outdoor areas to enjoy the summer in a beautiful setting. This includes, for example, the Bistro bar stool from Fermob, which is made of metal and available in many colours. Bar stools for the catering industry must be easy to clean and maintain. Some bar stools, such as the Hee bar stool from Hay, are also foldable, stackable and easy to transport thanks to their low weight. A blessing for catering staff.
Bar stools in companies and business premises
Bar stools, known for their versatility, are also becoming increasingly popular in companies. The right bar stool makes it possible to set up a small dining area with a standing table for a quick lunch, or you can employ them to meet for a quick chat or hold a small meeting in a less formal and more relaxed atmosphere. Bar stools can be used flexibly and are therefore also ideal for working on a laptop while enjoying a coffee in a company cafeteria.
Whether Scandinavian such as the wooden Bar stool NY11 from Norr11 , industrial like the Rowac stool or the metallic style Bar stool Masters metallic, employees will be pleased with decorative bar stools that ensure a pleasant and relaxed working atmosphere.

FAQ
What is the difference between a bar stool and a bar chair?
The main difference between a bar stool and a bar chair is the backrest: the bar chair has a backrest, the stool does not. The stool can sometimes be height-adjustable or swivel. The bar chair, on the contrary, very rarely. A bar chair can be equipped with armrests. The bar chair is generally more comfortable and is therefore more meaningful for people who will remain seated for a long time, for eating for example. But it is more cumbersome because of the backrest and armrests. The bar stool in contrast offers greater flexibility of movement and is more suitable for short-term sitting.
What height should I choose for my bar stool or chair?
To choose the ideal bar stool, you must take into account the height of the counter, the island, or the dining table around which the stools will be grouped. If the seat of the bar chair is upholstered, you must also take this into account in your calculation. The standard seat height of a bar stool is approximately 75-80 cm. This height is suitable for high tables or counters approximately 110 cm high. High kitchen stools have a height of 65 cm, corresponding to the height of a kitchen table or of an island. In both cases, for ideal comfort, you must allow for a gap of 25-30 cm between the seat and the underside of your table or counter.
